Law Firm Business Coach
For Law Firm Owners Ready to Run the Firm Instead of Being Run By It
Sean Soole is a business coach and mentor for law firm owners across Australia. Having owned a legal practice for over 10 years, he knows firsthand the challenges of growing a successful practice.
He works with sole practitioners who have grown into a small team, boutique firms with a handful of principals, and established practices juggling multiple practice areas across family, commercial, property, criminal, employment and personal injury law. You may have built a firm past the point where you personally bill every matter, yet you are still the one chasing WIP, approving every hire, managing every referral relationship and holding the whole operation together between court appearances. If so, Sean’s mentoring program is built for the stage you are at.
Why Profit Stalls as Law Firms Grow
Most law firms hit a wall when the owner gets to capacity, hires additional lawyers, then attempts to pass over some of the client work. The issue is that most of the clients want to work with you, and not with your team. Then at the end of the year, despite the extra team, higher costs, and higher complexity and stress levels, your profit isn’t any better than it was when you were smaller.
The pattern is familiar. Every file still comes back to you for review, and when the client calls, you still end up on the phone. WIP climbs while completions and getting paid get delayed more and more.
The underlying problem is simple. You built a firm around what you could personally hold in your head, and the firm has outgrown that capacity. In most legal practices, this happens around the second or third fee-earner, or past $1M in revenue.
Fixing it takes a different set of skills from practising law, and they are not taught at law school. You need pricing that reflects the real cost of a matter, and a senior lawyer or practice manager who can run the day-to-day. It also means financial visibility beyond WIP and a clear answer to what kind of firm you are building.

How Sean Works With Law Firm Owners
Sean coaches law firm owners through The Inner Circle, a business mentoring program capped at 100 members. Members get one-on-one coaching with Sean and more than 20 specialists on his Mentor Panel, a structured framework, quarterly Inner Circle events in Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast, and a community of business owners working through the same stage as you are.
For law firms, the early focus is usually on:
- Finding where the margin is going: Most firms lose more than they realise between the hours their lawyers work and what ends up billed and paid. Unbilled time, write-offs nobody questions and matter budgets that run over without the client being told all add up. Getting this measured properly is usually the first month of work.
- Pricing beyond the billable hour: Many firms still charge by the hour for every type of matter. On predictable work, fixed fees can lift margins and give clients more certainty. Sean built and ran his own practice on fixed fees, and the coaching works through where that approach suits your firm and where it does not.
- Building a senior team under you: If you are the only person who can quote a matter, win a client or sign off on strategy, the firm can only grow as far as your week allows. Sean’s team works with you on which lawyers to develop into leaders and when to bring in a practice manager. It also covers how to set the firm up so fewer decisions land back on your desk.
- Knowing your numbers: Most principals run the firm off the bank balance and a P&L that arrives from the accountant a quarter late. You get a much better basis for every decision once you can see profit by matter type, what each lawyer is billing, and a cash flow forecast that allows for how long clients take to pay.
- Deciding what kind of firm you want: A high-margin boutique with three lawyers is a very different business to a 20-lawyer firm across several practice areas, and both can work well. The coaching helps you decide which firm fits the career and life you want, then build toward it.
What It Looks Like When It Works
Inner Circle members across professional services have grown revenue, lifted margins and built firms that no longer rely on the owner being across every matter. The case studies show what that has looked like for members Sean and the team have worked with.

Sean has a rare combination of integrity and competence. If his gut tells him you are about to make the wrong choice, he will tell you straight, that kind of honesty is hard to find and it is exactly what you want from someone guiding your business. Sean and the team genuinely values giving you high quality advice tailored to your situation rather than the generic. Everything he shares is practical and actionable, so you walk away knowing exactly what to do next rather than sitting on a pile of theory. His thinking is also incredibly transferable. The principles apply to any business, and he has a real talent for breaking complex ideas down into analogies that actually stick with you long after the conversation ends. If you are serious about growing, Sean and his team are well worth your time.Posted on Google![]()

I am very grateful to have been part of the Sean workshop. The material and guidance provided helped me identify important gaps in my business and gave me clarity on the areas I need to improve. It was also inspiring to connect with other entrepreneurs and successful business owners who have built profitable businesses through discipline, consistency, and focus. Sean and his team went beyond business strategies by also sharing valuable psychological and neurological insights that influence the way we think, make decisions, and navigate challenges in business. This workshop gave me not only practical guidance for my future business decisions, but also motivation, confidence, and direction. A special thanks to Sean, David, and Tim for their humble, supportive, and professional approach to every individual case scenario. Highly recommended.Posted on Google![]()

Sean and his amazing team of mentors have been a great help with my journey as a business ower. They helped out by giving me practical tips and tools that are proven and effective.
Who This Is For
Sean’s coaching is built for established law firm owners, typically turning over $750k or more with healthy net profit. You will already have lawyers and support staff in place and be ready to grow the firm beyond what you can personally bill. The same principles apply across general practices, specialist boutiques and multi-practice firms.
If you are a sole practitioner working from home, or in your first year or two of practice, it is probably not the right fit yet. Sean’s content library has free resources to help you get to that stage.
How to Get Started
Start by applying online. One of Sean’s Freedom Mentors will review your application and book a no-pressure conversation at a time that works around your court diary. You will talk through where the firm is now and whether the program is the right next step. If it is not, the team will let you know.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Sean a lawyer?
Sean is not a lawyer, though he did own a legal practice in Sydney for over 10 years. The mentoring is not only on the business side of running a legal practice but also on growing you as the business owner, so you can create the legal practice you want. That covers pricing structures, margin, team, hiring, financial visibility, firm strategy and the role of the principal. Legal practice management, trust accounting and ethical obligations stay with your state’s law society and legal regulator.
My revenue keeps growing, but my profit is flat. Is that fixable?
Yes, and it is one of the most common patterns Sean sees in firms past $1M. Revenue up with profit flat almost always comes back to effective billing, write-offs, and pricing that has not moved with wage inflation. Often lawyers are billing fewer hours than their targets suggest, and matter budgets are blown without clients being told. Hourly rates may not have changed in two years while senior associate salaries have climbed 10% or more. Sorting the measurement is usually the first piece of work inside Inner Circle because it moves the numbers quickly.
How do I know when to hire another lawyer?
Getting the mix of senior and junior lawyers right has a big effect on profit, and it is hard to judge without clear numbers. The coaching looks at how to cost each lawyer’s time into a matter, when to bring on the next fee-earner, and when to promote a senior associate into a leadership role. It also covers how to structure practice groups around the work your firm does.
I want to move from hourly billing to fixed fees. Does the coaching cover that?
Yes. The shift from time-based to fixed or value-based pricing is one of the more common transitions Sean works on with legal members, and it is how he built and ran his own legal practice for 10+ years. Done well, it lifts margins on predictable work and improves the client experience. Done poorly, it costs the firm money on matters that run longer than expected. The coaching looks at which practice areas suit fixed fees, how to price the move properly, and how to make the transition without losing margin while the new model beds in.
